Clarification # 1 - What is "Social Media"...?

Social Media is many things to many people - this is a first of a few posts over the next little while that I'll cover some of the words & phrases that many of my customers start to get that blank look on their faces when I use them...
(I try not not to use confusing terms of course - but sometimes they just slip out...!)

Social Media in the old days - was as simple as allowing web site visitors to post or reply to other peoples posts in a web based forum. It was a free exchange of ideas - hopefully on topic and hopefully useful to the participants or visitors to your web site.

Often in unmoderated form it caused more headaches than benefits...

These days while the content of a discussion forum may look pretty much the same today as it used too - it's the technology that has changed - now we have many different ways to interact with others and share / comment on or agree / disagree with each other using technology.

Social Media sites such as Facebook, Linked in, Bebo use a "personal web site" model for the social interaction to take place.

Newer sites such as Twitter, Twine and Ning use a more interactive model for the discussion to take place.

Many of these online web sites (or Social Media Tools) use Web 2.0 concepts (that phrase will be number 2 in the series ;-) as a base.

Let us all know through the contacts page if you agree / disagree and if you have any better explanation (or examples)...

After all this is social media in action - thanks for stopping by...
