| Web 2.0 (oft-times without the "point zero") has been around a little while now - perhaps only since 2004 or so. |
I've seen a change over that time - not only has the term gained a lot more exposure - it has also changed (or should I say evolved) since that time.
Originally used to describe some of the new programming tools available to aid interactivity on a web site it now means much more - literally "web based tools to change your life / business".
The back-end tools are still there and developing at a huge pace but the usefulness of the web sites that have been created have increased 100 fold.
Many of these web based tools "plug-in" to other programs such as web browsers to extend the core functionality - while others replace paid software with even more features.
Many also allow access to programming components for others to extend what the base Web 2 tool does and some companies are starting to specialise in these lug-ins much like a company would embrace a programming platform of days gone by.
Web 2 can also be considered to be a design theme - we've seen a specific set of user interface designs starting to look the same and work in a similar way across a lot of the tools too.
For some more information about Web 2,0 and how you can benefit in your business keep a look out for our Webinar series that covers many of the best practices of using Web 2.0 in your business.
