Clarification # 3 What is Cloud Computing

Cloud computing refers to the latest Web 2 practice of considering all your data - and the tools that create or manipulate that data - lives "out there" on the web.
There isn't a single provider of this service for all your information - yet - although some back-up services can be used in this way.

One of the bigger examples of cloud computing is Google Docs - you use a web browser to create, edit or share (collaborate in real time...!) word processing documents, spreadsheets, fill-in forms or presentations.

These documents are available to you from any web connected computer and you can save them, email them or print them at any time.

Blogs or other social media web sites can be considered also to be part of the cloud computing revolution.

Many of these web tools can also be called "Software as a Service" or "SaaS" for short and traditional software companies are concerned about what is going to happen to the traditional model - where software was installed on each computer.
